That is why songwriting is a popular form of expression for many people. Songwriters often write very personal emotional songs but they may also write songs for plays, movies, and commercials. Songwriting can be a lucrative career if a song takes off in popularity or it may just be a hobby, however one thing remains constant, music is one of the most important expressions of imagination.
Songwriters perform a number of functions in their field but that is depending on things like ambition level, career goals, and specific talents. A songwriter may simply write song lyrics and music, and then sell the completed song to a record company or performing artist, which is common among pop music artists who have people writing for them. Another type of songwriter is the singer/songwriter. This person writes his or her own material. Including lyrics, and musical accompaniment, and performs it themselves.

Pioneers wrote songs as a way to relax after long days of work (4). One of the most famous work songs was “Yankee Doodle” which was sung by American soldiers during the Revolutionary War.
One of the first cultures known to have a system of music theory is Ancient Greece. Somewhere around 500 B.C., the Greeks started classifying music scales. Music also played an important part in the Hebrew culture. The book of Psalms in the Bible contains song lyrics; King David was a well-regarded musician and songwriter. Myths and historical accounts from thousands of years ago mention people performing for the pleasure of kings and gods.
The period of Renaissance (The Age of Rebirth) brought many changes to the fortunes of composers and songwriters. As creativity gained value, composers ventured off beyond their restrictive forms of medieval music and began to develop more of an individual style. This included the introduction to ballet.
