National anthem is one of the important aspect in a sovereign state beside territory and flag. It is not just a song about the country, but within the compostion itself, there are stories and facts that is also as important as the state’s history. Rabaseda (2012) define national anthem as a musical composition, patriotic in general, that evokes and tells the history and the struggle of the people in a particular state. It is mostly used during a national important day and military honours. National anthem also serve as an important identity and unifying factor as a country. While the word "spangled" means flashing or sparkling, and the word "banner" means flag. Songs of The Star-Spangled Banner also have laws, but these laws did not precept how to sing this song but how to listen it instead. When the song echoed and the American flag go up, all non-civil peoples have to stand up and put their right hand on to the left chest exactly in the heart, while the civilian peoples have to do respect toward the American flag.
Moreover, The Star - Spangled Banner was adopted from Key’s poem, and it was published on 20 September 1814, sentenced to a famous English music composition "To Anacreon in Heaven". Even years before Congress officially regulated this song as the national anthem, it was already a popular song back then and became a regulation for military bands to played this song for the necessary ceremonies . Army and Navy adopted the song and think of the national anthem, although it did not get that until the official distinction in 1916, President Woodrow Wilson ordered that it should be the national anthem played by the military and naval services , but it was not until March 3, 1931 which is officially designated as the national anthem by an act of congress, and in 1931 when it was declared so by law (Butterworth, 1996).
The connection between the America’s national anthem and the American political heritage is that American national anthem is undeniably a part of American political struggle. As it is said before that this song history was started from the war against British Empire in 1812. Which is actually already happened since even before America’s independence. This song serves as the memorial of one of the America’s defence of their independence against British Empire (Butterworth, 1906).
The song lyric mostly depicting about the triumph of America against the British Empire during the Fort McHenry bombardment incident. One of the line example is:
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
