The definition of marriage varies depending on who you ask. Some people say it is a union between a man and woman, and others would argue that marriage is a union between two partners. The topic of same-sex marriage has been a growing debate in the last century. Seventeen states currently have a law that allows same-sex marriages, eight which have been passed since 2011 (ProCon.org). This suggests that there is an increase in the belief that same-sex couples should be able to marry, and I agree. I believe that America is changing and it is time for the country as a whole to accept same-sex marriage. Same-sex marriage can provide benefits to our country, and there are several advantages to marriage that same-sex couples are being deprived of.
One reason I believe that same-sex couples should be allow to marry is for financial opportunities. Married couples are entitled to several benefits financially, and couples that are banned from getting married are denied these benefits. This includes small benefits such as raising a credit score, to larger benefits such as sharing employer health benefits. Marriage allows a couple to obtain joint health, home, and auto insurance. Also when a spouse dies there is no need to prove ownership of their items. Having these financial rewards are essential at creating financial stability, which is especially necessary for couples who have children. All couples should be eligible for these financial opportunities.
Along with benefiting the gay and lesbian, same-sex couples can also benefit America by providing stable homes for adopted children. According to the Administration for Children and Families, there are 400,00 children in the United States that are living in foster care. “We should be begging gay couples to adopt children. We should see this as a great boon that gay marriage could bring to kids who need nothing more than two loving parents“ (Klein). I completely agree with Klein’s statement, and believe that adoption is one of the biggest pro’s for same-sex marriage. A family doesn’t need to have a male and female parent. All children really need is parents who will nurture, care and love them, and same-sex couples are certainly capable of being exceptional parents. Marriage can help provide same-sex couples with family stability that only applies to married couples. This includes hospital visitation rights and protection in event of the marriage ending or a spouse dying. Same-sex couples, and their possible children deserve family stability.
In addition to children being adopted, there are other ways same-sex marriage can benefit America. The legalization of gay marriage would promote equality throughout the country by displaying that gays and lesbians are...
