Carl Jung once said, “One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant for the soul of the child.” (Jung) Children are born ready to learn and are anxious to know everything about anything. Learning and developing these concepts helps build the foundation for the rest of your life. However as a little child you thrive from human relationships and you learn from what teachers, parents and other adults around you are doing. She had divided the first quarter of a human’s life into 4 stages. “The first lasts from conception to the age of 6. The second from 6 to 12 years of age is regarded as a period when the child is hungry to find things out. From 12 to 18 is thought of as a creative period while the stage from 18 to 24 was identified as a period of ‘calm expansion’ (Bradley 2011, as cited in McGraw-Hill) Montessori believed that teachers should lead, and of course be in charge of the classroom. However children should be allowed their independence and are able to function without constant supervision from educators. Montessori was so successful in her theories that there are Montessori schools modeled after her teachings styles and theories. It is proven that children enrolled at Montessori schools preform at a higher level and are better prepared for life after graduation. (Kirschner, 2013).
Like Montessori, John Dewey also believed that successful learning happens through experience. Dewey came to the realization that children would only be involved in learning if they were learning about something they were personally interested in. Dewey himself once said, “Education is a social process. Education is growth. Education is, not a preparation for life; Education is life itself.” (Dewey)w Dewey has had such a significant impact in the world of education that many of his ideas and theories are still used in many classrooms today. A ideal classroom setting for Dewey, would be one that is relaxed, yet functional with the teacher in charge, but not completely controlling. The learning styles are very hand-on without very much lecturing. There would be tons of teacher to student, and student to student interaction. “If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow.” (Dewey)
Erik Erikson developed a eight stage chart starting at birth and ending at the end of your life. During the course of your life you experience conflicts and events that help shape you as a person. In order to move up the scale, you must first accomplish the step you are on. You must successfully master the steps in order from one to eight in order to obtain development, according to Erikson. Level one is, Trust vs. Mistrust. This stage is during you life between the ages of birth and two years old. These young children are unsure of everything, and have not grasped their world yet. These infants look to their caregivers for guidance and a sense of assurance. This stage of life is so vital for life, it is so important for caregivers to give these infants the touching, loving attention they so desperately crave. The second stage of the chain of development is Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt. This happens during early childhood, and this stage is all about control and choices.
