The Internet has evolved into a platform where mass amounts of people gather and share what’s important in their lives. With so much information being passed around daily it’s important that between finding out if the Raptors won and who Drake is dating now, that major social issues are being shared. The Internet has affected and almost completely changed all forms of journalism for better or worse. Dissident journalism is mainly about getting one’s voice heard to a mass amount of people. There is no better place to do that then the Internet. It is extremely important for these journalists to have a voice and even more vital for the public to be able to access everything. Journalists reporting on the Black Lives Matter movement have become famous because of their coverage. Activist journalists now have a bigger platform to showcase what they’re fighting for. Social media platforms have helped spread messages presented by activist journalists and reach larger audiences. The Internet has been good for dissident journalism because for big causes like Black Lives Matter, bringing more coverage to activist journalists, and social media platforms help reach a large audience.
The Black Lives Matter movement has been all over the news for the past year because of it’s strong leaders across North America. To find what helped start such a big movement, one must look on the Internet. The Internet has helped spread the movement and bring international attention to the cause. The Black Lives Matter gained national attention when Michael Brown was fatally shot by police officer Darren Wilson. All over the Internet the ‘#BlackLivesMatter’ hash tag took over and gained national recognition. In the novel ‘Are All the Women Still White?: Rethinking Race, Expanding Feminisms’, author Janell Hobson says, “Our team grew through a very successful Black Lives Matter ride. We organized to support the movement that was growing in St. Louis, Missouri after Michael Brown was killed.” She continued to say, “We’ve connected people across the country working to end the various forms of injustice impacting our people. We’ve created space for the celebration and humanization of Black lives” (Hobson 2016). Toronto Star writer, Desmond Cole has become a leader in the Black Lives Matter Toronto and has gained a huge following because of the power of the Internet. Cole has a large platform writing for the Toronto Star and he has used that platform in order to help start large protests against police brutality in Toronto. With his influence on the Internet he has spread awareness across Toronto about Black Lives Matter and all the struggles he faces.
