For many of the younger generation, Bob Marley is associated with the use of marijuana, and his influence in music is often forgotten. Bob Marley was not just a singer/ songwriter, but a hero figure that spread his vision of music and world peace cross the globe. In this paper I will discuss how Bob Marley is one of most significant musical artist of the twentieth century.
Bob Marley was born on February 6th, 1945 in nine mile Jamaica. Marley was a reggae singer, songwriter and could play the guitar. In the early 1960’s Bob Marley started playing in the group ‘The wailers’, and continued to play with them until the band separated in 1974. Bob Marley then started a solo career that resulted in the release of his breakthrough album, ‘Exodus’. Bob Marley’s album exodus was a very powerful album, and in December of 1999, time magazine named it album of the year. His song ‘One Love’ was also awarded song of the millennium by the BBC. In 1977, Bob Marley was diagnosed with a form of cancer in his toe, against the Doctors wishes he decided to not amputate his toe and continue on tour. Over the next eight months his health deteriorated, and he returned home to Jamaica, where he passed away shortly after arriving. (Gooding, C., 2011)
Although Bob Marley’s music was very influential, he never received a Grammy nomination. However in 2001 his music was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement award. This award is given to an artist who made creative contributions of large significance to their field of recording. Bob Marley was a member of the Rastafarian movement. This movement was one of the components in the development of reggae music. Bob Marley's music was strongly influenced by the political and sociological factors that were happening in the world. Nearly every one of his big hits took direct quotes from speeches and utilized the ideas of his religious views.
One of bob Marley’s most famous songs titled ‘One Love’ was written in 1976, during the battles over the Jamaican elections. Journalist, Vivien Goldman, was with Bob Marley while he was working on ‘One Love’. Goldman remembers Marley sitting on his small single bed with a young girl sitting at the end, and other visitors entering the room, “"We'll share the shelter, of my single bed," Marley sang, as he created a song that was both peaceful and angry at the same time.” (“One Love by Bob Marley and the Wailers”, 2016). He was able to create a song that was both peaceful and angry at the same time. I believe that the message Bob Marley was trying to relay through this song was that everyone can be one together.
Bob Marley had many other very influential songs throughout this singing career, another one of his famous songs was “war”. The song “War” was released in 1976. The songs lyrics were almost entirely derived from a speech given by Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie I in 1963. Haile gave the speech on October 4th 1963, where...
