In America we have many immigrants from other countries that come over to America speaking only the language that is known to them. In “Mothers Tongue” by Amy Tan, she talks about the many kinds of English that she uses to speak with her mother, husband, and people outside her home. Most immigrant children end up learning their parents’ language, English, and the broken, yet passing English that their parents use. This isn’t just exclusive to immigrant homes; many Americans have different forms of English that they use daily. Amy Tan even says that she realizes this while giving her speech, “The talk was going well until I remembered one major difference that made the whole talk sound wrong. My mother was in the room. And it was perhaps the first time she had heard me give a lengthy speech using the kind of English I have never used with her.”(Tan 654). She also notices this again when she is out shopping with her mother, “Just last week I was walking down the street with my mother and I again found myself conscious of the English I was using, the English I do use with her. We were talking about the price of new and used furniture and I heard myself saying this: “Not waste money that way.”(Tan 655). The idea of speaking several different languages doesn’t just stay in bilingual homes; they are in every home.
