The Meaning Of Freedom. Essay

964 words - 4 pages

Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence in 1776. He wrote it so that all the people can realize their rights. The Declaration of independence was written to strongly emphasize the three rights that all men have. They are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It states that all men are created equal. But in 1776, that wasn't the case. Were these truly freedoms? Did the Declaration only speak to white men? Was there a reason as to why Thomas Jefferson wrote, "All men are created equal? (Declaration of Independence, 13 colonies 1776). Why then does it not apply to everyone? Among the hypocrisies were the mistreatment of Native Americans, enslavement of African Americans, and the disregard to women's rights. The Declaration of Independence was created to gain independence form Great Britain to the colonies. In the Declaration of Independence it explains that governments are formed by men to protect these rights. If however the people weren't satisfied with laws or restrictions that the government would give them then the people also have the right to abolish that government and form a new one. Freedom was expressed mainly as a right by birth. But in truth it was created as a privilege to those that were superior or those above the rest. When Columbus, "discovered America" there seemed to have already been indigenous people. Columbus used the Native Americans for the gold he wanted to acquire. The pilgrims then took that example and decided to conquer this land and exile all the Native Americans. At the time Andrew Jackson was president and in his pursuit elate his people he offered white settlers free land. The problem was that this land was home to many Native Americans. So he decided to create the Indian Removal Act. He stated that, "the solution of the problem with the removal of the Cherokee tribes was to send them to the lands of the west. This would keep contact between Indians and colonists rare." (http://www.studyworld.com/indian_removal_act_of_1830.htm, accessed October 10, 2005). About 70,000 Native Americans had ten years to leave their homes and relocate to tribes in Oklahoma. Many of the Native Americans died of famine and disease as a result of this period known as, "The Trail of Tears." Andrew Jackson just wanted as much land to be given o the white settlers as possible. "It will separate the indians from immediate contact with settlements of whites; enable them to pursue happiness in their own way and under their own rude institutions." (http://www.studyworld.com/indian_removal_act_of_1830.htm, accessed October 10, 2005).Slavery was during the 16th and 17th centuries when plantation owners failed to meet their labor needs and with enslaved Native Americans and indentured servants. A reason for slavery was economic. A slave cost more than indentured servant but a slave worked for life and the investment would be larger. White colonist took the dark skin as a sign of inferiority and this was a reason to enslave the...
