The Moment I Found Music Essay

911 words - 4 pages

During the winter of 1988, I joined my fellow twirlers in the home town Christmas Parade and it would be the first time that I noticed the marching band whilethey were performing behind us in the line up of the parade. I was amazed by their high stepping, bright uniforms and the boldness of their sound. That was the moment I knew I wanted to be in the marching band.
Music would become a part of me and my life, but it was in grade school that I truly developed my skills. The arts were just beginning to be introduced in the county schools and the music teacher wanted the fifth graders to indulge. I remember the day that the band teacher came into my fifth grade history class and told us that there were limited slots available to join the band class. I cried out and ran to the front of the room to show her that our tickets matched. She told me that she would see me in two days in the first class of the year.

There were too many students that wanted to play the drums and not enough slots, so my teacher said that we would have to hold tryouts. I knew I would become a great drummer, I just needed the chance to hone my skills and prove to the band teacher that I could be a great percussion student so I spent the next week practicing to be ready for the tryouts. She ran me though different drills and beats. She tested my timing skills. There was no expression on her face on whether I did well or not. At the end of the tryouts she told me and my fellow hopefuls that the results would be...
