The Negative Effects Of Hubris Essay

887 words - 4 pages

Donald Trump, an egotistical businessman, thinks so highly of himself that he has now become a joke in the eyes of the world. Trump has created his false self-image due to his excessive pride, called hubris. Hubris causes people to have mistaken identities, arrogance, and can lead to their downfall. Aeolus had put all of the winds blowing away from Ithaca in a bag, so Odysseus could sail home much easier, but Odysseus’ crew believed that the sack contained valuable treasure inside. Odysseus and his crew could see Ithaca, when the crew, “loosened the sack and all of the winds burst out and a sudden squall struck and swept us back to sea… far from our native land” (10, 52-54). If Odysseus had told his crew what the bag had inside, everyone would have returned safely back to Ithaca, and the suitors never would have abused Odysseus’ house and family. But instead, Odysseus’ hubris prevented everyone from getting back home, and ultimately led to all of Odysseus’ crew dying. In addition to keeping important information from his crew, Odysseus’ hubris delayed the journey home even more when his pride made him lose the longing for Ithaca.
Odysseus stayed with Circe for a year, forgetting about Ithaca and his family, due to his egotistical behavior. Odysseus managed to free his men from Circe, but then instead of continuing their journey, Odysseus and his crew stayed on Circe’s island to relax for a year. On the island they, “sat at ease, day in, day out, till a year had...
