Social problems are the root cause for many other problems. Being obese is not anymore a personal problem. It is turned into a huge social problem. Children are the next generation, and every decade more and more get obese. Child should be taught in school as well as at home, about healthy food habits and the importance of keeping himself/herself fit. A lot of children around the world are becoming obese due to an apathetic lifestyle and poor eating habits. Should obese children and adults be banned from what causes their obesity? Food.
Obesity not only affects people’s everyday lives, it also has damaging mental health effects, including negative body image, low self-esteem. The first thing people notice about another is the body, and in this society, being chubby is frowned upon. Humans have a tendency to notice the bad comments more than the good ones. This can cause an obese person to have a low self-esteem. Meaning that anymore comments will be even more hurtful. Some people do not find this a problem, and believe that the obese can just quickly lose the weight and move on with life. But it’s not that easy.
Obesity is a growing problem in the USA, and the main causes can be grouped into three headings: poor food choice, lack of exercise, and lack of awareness. People today eat more and more junk food and fast food. This food is high in fats and cholesterol (which are bad). The body is overloaded with fats and sugar, which is converted into body fat (which is bad). The second main cause is lack of exercise. Genetic or not, many obese people do not exercise, thinking that the problem is unsolvable, and a slight few believe it will not benefit them at all. According to Stacy Schmidt M.S. “regular exercise is a proven way to decrease risk for these and other chronic diseases. It will help to prevent or manage high blood pressure. It also raises high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, known as the “good” cholesterol, and lowers low density lipoprotein (LDL) or “bad” cholesterol. This combination will decrease the amount of harmful plaques that can buildup on your artery walls and keeps blood flowing smoothly. Regular exercise can also help prevent type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, and certain cancers” (Schmidt). But maybe that’s due to lack of social awareness. Many people can often be seen taking part in activities associated with obesity. For example, people make clubs for obesity, but that is not social awareness. That is categorizing them into a different social group. The kind of gathering that they should attend is the ones where a doctor is involved to help solve the problem.
Obesity seems to be a much more important idea that most give credit for. Next time Someone sees or thinks of obesity, think about what you just read and realize what is really going on. It is likely you undervalued obesity before, but will now start to give the credited needed and deserved.
