Adaptation is when an individual adjusts to new situations . Many individuals who move to a new city, or workplace, or school have to adapt their new environments. These individuals have to meet new people, make new friends and even change their lifestyle. Some may find adapting to a new area difficult while others have no trouble with it. Some may even find the new environment more comforting compared to their old lifestyle, and habits. In the novel, Lord of the Flies, William Golding writes about two foiling characters, one who adapts well to the new environment, while the other struggles. Like Jack, Ralph has a longing to fit in with the other boys and to adapt into their new environment. Ralph bullies Piggy and tells all the other boys that “he’s not Fatty, his real name’s Piggy.”, leaving the boys laughing hysterically. Even though Piggy told him that he “didn’t care, as long as they didn’t call [him] Piggy.” Despite the numerous times Piggy begged him not to tell anyone, Ralph spilling the beans, leaving a group of boys snickering, resulting in a furious little boy. Ralph is like an orange; awful on the outside, but sweet on the inside. The only reason Ralph told the other boys Piggy’s secret was to fit in, to be able and to adapt into his new environment. As he did so, Ralph deserted his morals and values, to become part of a society that he can easily adapt into and be accepted.
