The pacemaker was created by Mark Lidwell in 1926 (Twentieth-century inventors. New York: Facts on File, 1991). The first pacemaker weighed roughly 99 pounds and was placed on the outside of the skin, on your chest. It was very bulky and heavy. It was powered by a 12-volt auto battery and relied upon vacuum tubes. A pacemaker is a small unit that helps your heart beat more consistently to correct irregular heartbeats. The pacemaker emits an electric stimulation that helps control your heartbeat. It’s placed under the skin of your chest usually under the collarbone. Pacemakers are the new defibrillators and some branches of the military are trying to make technology to allow them to be used on the battlefield.
