The Positive Effects Of Advanced Technology

“We are not cave dwellers anymore, we live in the age of technology…”, states Friedrich Durremalt, a Swiss novelist. Because of the advances of technology, the struggles of everyday life are made simple. Freeman Dyson writes, “Technology is a gift of God. (3). Doctors are now able to look at a person’s genes and determine if breast cancer is hereditary. Approximately, “about 60% of women with an inherited mutation will develop breast cancer sometime during their lifetime.”(3).
The advancement of technology not only made it possible for doctors to treat diseases that were once untreatable, but patients can now find out more quickly and effectively about the status of their health. Learning to use it enhances their self-esteem and makes them excited about coming to school”. (5). An elementary school teacher noted, “I see more confidence in the kids here…they can do things on the computers that most of their parents can’t do and that’s very empowering and exciting for them.”(5). Exposing children to the world of technology can encourage them to work together with other children and share ideas. The internet allows children to stay in contact with others through email, video chat, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Social networking also gives people a chance to voice their opinion about different subjects. A 2010 report was conducted stating that “around 72% of internet users between the ages of 18-29 use social networking websites” (8); leading to a conclusion, “children acquire social skills no so much from adults but from their interactions with one another”, states Zic Rubin, a US social psychologist.
By having a computer in every home and school, increases a student's awareness about the availability of different kinds of technology and resources that can enhance his or her education. Using interactive whiteboards or Smart boards allows students and teachers to interact and touch the screen. Animations are used to create an illusion of movement; providing drawings or a series of pictures. For example, if a child wants to learn about the phases of the moon, the child can watch dozens of animations of how the moon revolves around the Earth. Along with animation programs, games that require memory, use of logic, problem solving and critical thinking skills can help increase a child’s learning ability. Mathematical software programs often require the use of logic and problem solving skills which can increase literacy rates. Statistics show that in a ninth grade Algebra class in Pittsburgh, “on the average, 470 students in an experimental class...
