One of the innate qualities that every human poses is the desire to make his or her life better. In our quotidian life, we endeavor to enhance the every aspect of our life ranging from our diet to clothes. This century is deemed to be persuaded greatly by enormous advancement in biotechnology. Biotechnology is a very broad field. It comprises neuroscience, genetic engineering, human cloning and much more. Among all of those fields, gene therapy is going to be the most demanding and discussed subject in the near future. In the last 30 years, our scientists have discovered a lot of facts about genes, their structure, their DNA coding, and the possibility of their modification. Gene therapy is a kind of treatment that uses genes to as a medium of medication to cure different difficult and sometimes incurable diseases. But with the numerous benefits associated with this gene therapy, the main public concern is if it is ethical to use genes of human, animal or plants to cure diseases. In our media-intensive society, newspapers, magazines and T.V. shows all broadcast different points of view about gene therapy.
Probably one of the most visible applications of gene therapy will be to cure male infertility. The strategy behind this process is to take DNA from other organisms, study the code, and modify the code in a way that will have the expected result. Male infertility is beset with many problems. Socially, women are mostly held accountable for infertility. But when male has the problem , they don’t want to seek treatment. Even some of those go to the physician, the doctors are unable to completely cure this disease. Because the reasons behind this problem are not readily apparent. It is the problem of some deformed enzymes or proteins. The sperm cells go into several steps to become effective and functional. It includes the joining of sperm tail, building up of DNA inside the cell. In the final step, a specific gene trigger the DNA to coil around the sperm head. But when a male person lacks that gene which helps the DNA to set correctly inside a cell becomes infertile. According to Sarah Kliff, researchers of University of north Carolina have found a gene in mice which can be used to treat male infertility. Doctors could use that gene to target the defective gene in male human to restore the normality of sperm production. This new treatment may alter the shape of sperm and make it able to impregnate the eggs of female. Thus gene therapy can give a couple their long cherished baby. However, the ethical concern associated with the gene therapy in curing impotence is a matter of thinking. In human society, influencing a male’s reproductive system artificially other than naturally is deemed as unethical.
