The Process Of Writing Essay

1306 words - 6 pages

This will be my fifth and final attempt at completing this essay. I have found myself sitting at this desk five times now over the course of the past couple of days, each time with the full intention of completing this assignment. Each time thinking I had finally figured out the perfect beginning, middle, and end with perfectly incorporated examples to help prove that skeptical thinking does indeed relate to me in many different ways. The words coming to mind had plan for me, however. I first sat down and thought up any examples I could, putting them all down at once without thinking twice. Reading through it after I had finished I became bored with my own writing after the first three lines and quickly realized that was not the approach I needed to take to succeed at this assignment. This would be the first of four failed attempts, each an idea I thought was brilliant that I watched crash and burn right in front of my eyes.
A few hours later I was prepared to start again. I had been seriously considering what to write so as not to make the same mistake that I did my first try. I had well thought out examples, knew which order to put them in, and was convinced that this was the winning outline. The well thought out words did not escape me this time around and I was well on my way to a phenomenal essay. Stopping in the middle of my writing, I asked my roommate to read a paragraph I had just written with the assignment in mind. She confirmed my belief that it was good writing but complained that my examples were far from believable and if I wanted others, my professor included, to believe them and really understand them I would have to find a way to prove them and make them more believable. I realized at that moment that I had not even considered backing up my stories and examples with factual evidence which was a major oversight in my writing process. I decided to take a break and come back to writing this when I had more evidence and better explanations to give for each example.
Staring at my half written paper for the third time that day, I felt defeated to say the least. I had given this essay two valid attempts and had very little to show for it. I reread what I had read so far and felt myself sink farther down into my seat as I realized how cookie-cutter my essay sounded. It followed the exact rules and guidelines of the assignment, sure, but I took no risks, raised no questions, and sparked no interest. What would be the point of being given the opportunity to think outside the box and really dig into this new material if I was just going to do it in a traditional, average way? I wanted my reader to question the choices I made in my writing and maybe even disagree with some of my choices. I did not want to have them read through this essay and agree with everything they saw. Yes, that would probably be a satisfying read for them but there is nothing unexpected about a paper written like that and I knew I wanted to...
