For the past couple of years, recent advancements in drilling technology has
expanded the number of wells that previously considered to be too costly. Using the new
technology, the oil companies have created a new method of drilling called hydraulic
fracturing. Otherwise known as fracking. This new method of drilling is being used not
only in the United States, but also in other parts of the world. It also has one of the
highest potential to help generate money for our economy to turn it back around. But as

To get the picture of how much water this is, it's equivalents water usage of around 40 to
80 cities that have a population of 50,000 (Hydraulic Fracturing n.d.). Now this isn’t a
problem the amount of water they use, it is the efficiency that is in question.
To explain, although this method of drilling has only been around for about half a
century, it is not an excuse of the amount of water that companies are being allowed to
waste. As stated earlier, the amount of water used in these drilling projects annual ranges
in the billions of gallons(Hydraulic Fracturing n.d.). Hydraulic Fracturing (n.d.) also
mentions that depending on the type of well the amount of water that will be used at that
site will vary. These ranges are from 50,000 to 350,000 gallons of water for coal bed
methane wells and from 2 to 10 million gallons of water for well for horizontal shale
wells. In fact, a report from the EPA which contained studies, information gathered by
the oil and gas industry, and conversations with managers, reported that from anyway of
20 to 85 percent of fracking fluids remain in the ground (Hydraulic Fracturing n.d.). On a
smaller scale these projections might be excusable, but with the amount we’re dealing
with, not to mention the precious material that is being used, the amount being left in the
ground is inexcusable. Surely there is has to way to reduce the amount of water left
behind or level the amount of water to moderate levels. Because not only the amount of
the type of water they are using is only 3 percent of total amount of water on Earth, only
about .1 percent we can actually use, but it also because of what they add into the fluid.
