The Pros And Cons Of Orthodontics

1855 words - 8 pages

Braces were not very popular back in the day. The dreadful nickname “metal mouth” was often used to tease those who had to show horribly thick, metal wires and brackets all over their teeth. Then, there was the thought of experiencing a first kiss with a mouth full of metal. Most patients preferred to take a more natural route electing to live with a slightly imperfect smile over a metal one. Today, braces are fashion statements, imagine that! Patients can choose from a variety of color combinations for a trendy look, or they can choose the more natural kind. With more manageable materials and a variety of choices, all ages of patients are wearing braces with pride. While considering the ...view middle of the document...

Experts say it strongly depends on the treatment required. Early treatment can also prevent larger oral issues later on. Catching anything problematic will be beneficial to the patient. If the patient decides to wait it could mean longer treatment time or even issues that are noticed too late to fix, such as expansion of the palate.
Not every patient gets the luxury of getting braces and having straight teeth at a young age. There are many adults these days who sacrifice short-term low confidence for a long-term straight and beautiful smile. The risks of getting braces at an older age can quickly outweigh the benefits if not done properly. Adults are usually worried about how long the treatment will be and try to hurry to get the braces off early. Some orthodontists will see a patient every two weeks if requested to speed up the process; however, what most adult patients do not know is that moving the teeth too quickly can cause nerve damage or root resorption. Root resorption is the breakdown or destruction, and subsequent loss, of the root structure of a tooth (“Dental Malpractice”). Nerve damage can occur as a result of pressure on the root surface, most commonly caused by orthodontic treatment. The patient is then left with a root canal or an extraction. No matter the age of the patient, communication should always stay open between the orthodontist and general dentist to help prevent serious issues that may occur later on.
Open communication between dentists and proper oral hygiene is not just the key to pretty teeth. It is the key to avoiding common dental problems like gingivitis, tartar, and demineralization. These dental problems are unpleasant enough on their own, but if not taken care of in a timely manner they can also turn into more serious oral health issues. An assessment of the patient’s mouth along with a good cleaning before treatment is mandatory in most orthodontic practices. Once the braces are bonded, each patient should be educated on how to properly care for them and clean their teeth. Staying away from hard foods, sugars, and soda can also prevent cavities, bands coming loose, and brackets coming off. Fixing broken appliances can sometimes be an extra charge and can become costly very quickly if intervention by a parent or dentist is not taken.
Braces are not cheap. It is not very often that an insurance covers orthodontics and when they do, sometimes it is for a specific age range of young adults. The average cost of orthodontic treatment is between $3,000 and $6,000, depending on where you live and what the treatment plan looks like (S., Lynn. "12 Things You Should Know Before Getting Braces"). Some dental offices offer a discount for paying upfront in advance for all your treatment. This may not be the best option depending on which office is chosen and what their reputation is like. Saving money is great, but protecting yourself financially is even better. While most orthodontists are principled and try run a...
