The Pros And Cons Of Cigarette Smoking

1293 words - 5 pages

In 2012, The Center For Disease Control(CDC) reported that “An estimated 42.1 million people, or 18.1% of all adults (aged 18 years or older), in the United States smoke cigarettes“(“Adult Cigarette Smoking in the United States: Current Estimates”). A long time ago in the 1960s, The Flintstones had a sponsor by the name of Winston cigarettes whom had television commercials depicting famous cartoon characters Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble “on break“ smoking cigarettes while their wives are doing all of the work. Back then, that wasn’t perceived in the same way had that commercial been aired today, with social media hounding every potential controversial issue the second it hits the FCC airwaves. As many people know, in the years since that time, cigarette smoking has now become the number one cause of lung cancer in the United States. Similar to gay rights and abortion, there are a number of different perspectives on the issue of smoking. In this particular research paper, there are three different points of view on cigarette smoking: There are those out there who believe that smoking reduces risk of diseases, such as Parkinson’s, there are others, who believe that smoking is therapeutic, and lastly, there are others who think that smoking is toxic to your health, and it should be banned altogether.
There are a number of reasons why there are a large number of smoking advocates on Earth. Some people believe that smoking cigarettes can reduce the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease. According to Reuter’s Health, “The researchers found that the more years a person had smoke, the lower the risk of Parkinson’s disease”(Harding 4). However, although there are thousands of tobacco supporters out here who support this claim and argue that smoking does have its benefits, some of the researchers who oversaw this study do not at all condone using this study as an excuse. “Smoking is bad for you and no one should advocate smoking just for prevention of Parkinson’s”, says Dr. Honglei Chen of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in North Carolina (Harding 2). Yes, a person’s risk of Parkinson’s is reduced to some degree. To some, that is just enough ammunition they need to fight the battle to keep cigarettes legal. But to others, including members of the research group, this study does not accentuate why it does lower the risk of Parkinson’s in many individuals, it still does not explain to them why millions have died using this substance.
Also, there are millions of people out there who smoke to relieve stress, calm an individual down, or just makes a person happy. These statements are true to a certain point. “Since nicotine is a psychoactive (mood altering) drug, tobacco use seems to make the subjective effects of stress (such as feelings of frustration, anger, and anxiety) less severe. This is because the nicotine in cigarettes reaches the brain in only 8 seconds, releasing a chemical called dopamine. Dopamine causes...
