The Purpose Of Leadership In Healthcare

INTRODUCTION
According to Business Dictionary.com, leadership is defined as the individuals who are the leaders in an organization, regarded collectively. It also can be define as the activity of leading a group of people or an organization or the ability to do this. Leadership involves the establishing of a clear vision, sharing the vision with other so that they will follow willingly, providing the needed information, knowledge, and methods to realize the vision and coordinating and balancing the conflicts interests of all members and stakeholders.
On the other hand, a leader is a person who influences a group of people in order to achieve certain goal. According to Oliver, (2006), ...view middle of the document...

Therefore there are few characteristics or qualities that are needed to be fulfilled by a person in order to become leader for healthcare in the 21st century.
Leadership Roles in Healthcare
Oliver (2006) has stated a few roles of leadership in healthcare. The key roles are teaching, inspiring confidence, empowering, improving the performance by having the supporting reflection or clinical observation. The other roles are rewarding and recognizing individual contributions and recognizing the needs of the service from clinically based environment.
Other than that, it is important to lead and develop the services by implementing changes to the system or the organization. Lastly is the importance of supporting the organization and when needed, providing a bridge between the senior management and the other members in informing, supporting and developing national agreed initiatives or the government initiatives.
Moreover it is important for the leader to have the ability to explore personal and team beliefs or motives in order to perceived vision of success or the goal. Empowered leader is the key of the development of the organization.
Characteristics of a Leadership
Philip (2008) has listed 7 common traits in the characteristic of leadership. The characteristics are empathy, consistency, honesty, direction, communication, flexibility and conviction.
It is important to have a legitimate relationship with the others. This is because it will make it less likely that the personal issues and hatred will affect the group. When the other know about your empathetic to their concern, they are willingly to work and share in vision with no negative feeling.
A consistent leader will gain respect from the other and also shows their credibility. By showing this attitude, it will influence the other to follow. Honesty also may lead to credibility. This characteristic will allow better assessment and growth.
Furthermore, it is important for a leader to have a vision. It is the important characteristic of a good leadership. A good leader can create an impressive change by have a proper steps or ways to achieve the goal. An effective communication also important; it helps to keep a good working environment. Therefore the others will be more likely to react and achieve the goal when the leader has an effective communication about the expectations, issues and advices about the goals.
Moreover, flexibility is important, since not every problem require the same solution. By being flexible, best possible solution can be obtain from new ideas with an open minded way of thinking. Lastly is a conviction trait. ‘The leader who believes in the mission and works toward it will be an inspiration and a resource to the followers’ (Philip, 2008).
Other than the 7 common characteristic above, Holden Leadership Center have added, the leadership characteristic are proactive, respectful, enthusiastic, resourceful, rewarding, and well educated.
