In today’s society, there is a divide among Christians and homosexuals. Christians are being criticized for stating their beliefs about homosexuality. Society is accepting homosexuality as the new norm and expecting Christians to do the same. In Larry Alex Taunton’s article “The Genuine Conflict Being Ignored in the Duck Dynasty Debate,” Taunton begins the first paragraph stating “An evangelical Christian points out that there is, in fact, a tension between orthodox Christianity and homosexuality.”
Establishing trustworthiness, also known as ethos, is an important element when writing an argumentative essay. One way this can be accomplished is by establishing similarities with the audience (Dlugan). In order to form a personal connection, Taunton uses ethos in the second paragraph when he describes Duck Dynasty’s similarities to ZZ Top. By describing their “long beards and the Sharp Dressed Man opening theme song,” right away, the audience gets a visual image and feel that they can relate to Taunton.
In A GQ magazine interview with Duck Dynasty’s Phil Robertson, Robertson simply stated his beliefs about homosexuality and A&E suspended him from the show. In the third paragraph, Taunton uses pathos (emotional appeal) to describe the Robertson family’s openness about their beliefs in God. Phil Robertson explained, “My mission today is to go forth and tell people why I follow Christ” (qtd. in Taunton). Taunton points out that it should not have been a surprise that Phil Robertson did not agree with homosexuality and thinks it is a sin because he has made it very obvious that he is “a follower of Jesus Christ” and believes in what the bible states.
Taunton strives to persuade his readers that Phil Robertson’s beliefs about homosexuality are not what the conflict is really about. The true conflict is about the divide between Christianity and homosexuality. Taunton uses logos (logical reasoning) throughout the article by using the Bible in various locations.
