Here in the United States of America on the forth Thursday in November each year we, as a nation and as individual families, celebrate Thanksgiving. For most Americans we bring out our best dishes and have an enormous meal with turkey, dressing, green bean casserole and pumpkin pie. Families gather together, we eat until we are stuffed, we play games and watch football, but why? Have we lost the true meaning behind the beginning our nation? We have our tradition but somehow we have lost them important meaning of the treacherous start of a nation. Thanksgiving was not repeated until a few years later and then celebrated sporadically until President Abraham Lincoln declared it to be a national holiday in 1863. We have a plenty to be thankful for because they survived that first winter and courage that it took from those few left to continue on to help create the culture that we live in today.
Remembering what they went through and the courage it took can help us move forward in our own families. We all have a story either in our own life or the close past in our family history of a pivotal point that changed the path of our history that we should be thankful for. When I came to join my extended family here in the states, the Thanksgiving tradition was passed onto myself in the form of a time of remembrance. We share stories of loved ones that we have passed and of time gone by. At the dinner table before the turkey is carved, everyone says what they have been thankful for from the past year. The youngest member of our family says grace and receives the first portion carved by the eldest member. During the meal we take turns and tell what our plans are for the future. For myself, this time of thanksgiving gives me a center point to where I was and where I want to be in the whole scheme of life. Coming up with your own rituals and traditions will bring more meaning and life to the holiday.
The upcoming holiday season will be filled with mixed emotions and the forgotten...
