Do you remember the old magic trick of the coin behind your ear? As a child you were so naïve and you believed almost anything adults told you. You were so enthralled by the magic trick so much, that you were insensible to notice the coin was hidden in their hand the entire time. Even though magic does not exist, you believed in it with all your heart because adults made the deception that it was. The government and politicians performs this same magic trick to us; the general public about Global Warming. We are so use to deceits and deceptions that we no longer can differentiate between the truth and lies that we are constantly fed. There are lucid evidence of Global Warming and the results of our actions, but the government performs this trick to distract us from authenticity. Just like a child, we accept practically anything the government says because of their authority. And for individuals that try to aware us of the truth, like scientist, we accuse them of being in denial and a non-believer.
Al Gore addresses this issue in a Rolling Stone magazine essay that was published online. Even though he believes that the media and government have the greatest influence and impact on Global Warming, he also believes that the general public should be more aware of the dilemma at hand. He expresses to the public the solutions to help solve this problem and what they can do to better the society in a “greener” way.
For those who are unfamiliar with Global Warming, here is a brief summary about it and the past events that have occurred on the topic of Global Warming. Climate change is a long-term shift in the measurements of the weather. The atmosphere consumes a natural source of "greenhouse gases." They capture heat and keep the surface of the Earth warm enough for us to survive on. Without the greenhouse effect, the planet would be uninhabitable and a frozen or dried-out wasteland. While many politicians, particularly the Democrats, congratulate Gore for winning the Nobel Peace Prize for his works and stand on Global Warming, others remain in denial; mainly those of the government/political parties. Gore refers to them as, “financing pseudoscientist whose job is to manufacture doubt about what is true and what is false…spending hundreds of millions of dollars each year on misleading advertisements in the mass media,” (78).
The media has also taken part into denying Global Warming. As early as 1991, this was displayed in the New York Times in a document; “Reposition global warming as theory, rather than fact.” All of this adds up and sways the public to believe that these scientists are merely fabricating evidence and exaggerating the matter as a way of trying to receive more research grants. It’s very ironic how many of these “extremist ideologues” dare to accuse the...
