John MacArthur once said: “Commercialization has obscured the meaning of Christmas. The commercial has become more important than the carol. What man has to sell more important than what God has given.” This quote is a prime example of how commercialism has taken over society’s view of Christmas. Christmas is simply a day for big corporations to make millions and to trick others in believing that this day is predominantly based upon gifts. As a child, I viewed Christmas primarily as a day filled of presents, Christmas cookies, and Santa Clause. Now as an adult, I have come to the realization of the true meaning of Christmas. Christmas is not about the artificial items: it is about family, love, and the celebration of Jesus.
During my youth, I pictured Christmas simply as a decorated tree with presents underneath. I was amazed by the glorious lights wrapped around the evergreen conifer and the red and green wrapped presents. Christmas was a magical day, but was centered upon Santa Clause and worldly objects. This point of view began to change as my youthfulness transitioned into adult hood. Now, I view Christmas as a day spent with family. The countless memories made are something to cherish for a life time. It is not about the gifts around the tree: it is about the people around the tree. Many times people forget how important family is and take for granted all the marvelous things a family can bring into a person’s life. Family merrily wraps itself around one like a warm shawl.
Also, as a child I did not understand the importance of love during the holiday season. I believed that a gift represented a love for one another. After an hour of unwrapping gifts, I would simply ignore my surroundings and play until dusk. The whole meaning of Christmas is to express your love and gratitude for one another. Oftentimes, we take people for granted....
