The Relationship Between Attitudes Towards Academic Dishonesty, Infidelity, And Normalization Of Unethical Behavior

905 words - 4 pages

It was hypothesized that students with more accepting attitudes towards academic dishonesty would have more accepting attitudes towards infidelity. As predicted and consistent with the findings by Estep and Olson (2011), a positive correlation between academic dishonesty and infidelity was found giving support to the idea that attitudes towards infidelity and academic dishonesty are related. This finding is important because the current study shows that 82 participants (41.4%) reported to cheating in a class, whereas 87 participants (43.9%) reported to being cheated on by a partner. This hypothesis was based on the literature by McCabe (1999) which suggested that some students believe academic dishonesty is a norm in educational institutions. As predicted, a positive correlation was found between attitudes towards academic dishonesty and attitudes towards the belief that unethical behavior is normal. In other words, students who view unethical behavior as normal were more likely to view cheating in the classroom as normal. Findings by Blankenship et al. suggested that academic dishonesty is just another deviant behavior in the life of the student who participates in that behavior. Future research could investigate the relationship between students’ attitudes towards the belief that unethical behavior is normal and factors that might discourage those attitudes towards those behaviors. For instance, one factor could be the letter grade received by the student.
In this study, no relation was found between attitudes towards the belief that unethical behavior is normal and attitudes towards infidelity. This is a surprise because it was established in this study that accepting attitudes towards infidelity were related to accepting attitudes towards academic dishonesty. Most people would agree that both academic dishonesty and infidelity are unethical behaviors. So, it would seem that attitudes towards the normalization of unethical behavior would be related to attitudes towards infidelity. This finding might suggest that some students have accepting attitudes towards certain unethical behaviors, but infidelity is not one of them.
Last, it was hypothesized that there would be a difference in attitudes towards infidelity in women and men, such that women would be less accepting of infidelity than men. A significant relation was found between gender and attitudes towards infidelity such that women had less accepting attitudes towards infidelity than men. Hackathorn et al. found that students’...
