The Responsible Ones Essay

Romeo and Juliet is a well-known play written by William Shakespeare. Many know about this as one of the most famous plays in history. In the end, Romeo and Juliet take their lives. So who is responsible for the star-crossed lovers’ death? Many assumptions will be made that it’s Romeo and Juliet’s, Friar Lawrence’s, or even society’s fault. Who caused this tragedy? There will be many opinions from the audience as they analyze information from the play.

The audience may think that it is Romeo and Juliet’s fault for their death. They would argue that Romeo and Juliet could’ve changed the way things went. They could have told their parents about the secret they kept. Romeo didn’t have to kill Tybalt, and Juliet didn’t have to go along with Friar’s plan.
Another person responsible for Romeo and Juliet’s death is Friar Lawrence. Friar told Juliet his plan for her to sleep and fake being dead. This way Romeo could come and get her, and then they would live happy together. Friar told Juliet, “Hold! Get you gone, be strong and prosperous in this resolve. I’ll send a a friar to Mantua, with my letters to thy lord” (4. 2. 132-135). Friar could have done many things differently. He could have gotten with Romeo and Juliet before so they both knew what was going on. Friar could have told them to tell their parents about their love. Friar could have also gone to Mantua himself to explain things to Romeo. Things could have turned out better, or even worse. In the worst case, Romeo and Juliet would have been banished from Verona.
Overall, society could have been the biggest impact on the star-crossed lovers’ death. Everyone somehow played a part in the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet’s family are apart of their deaths. The nurse even plays a part in the death of Romeo and Juliet.
