There has been an increased need for the global leadership skills in managers on international projects to operate the business more successfully in the business world (Jackson, S, 2009).

With the growth in the new trends of globalization, internationalization, multinational companies have come into existence that hire workforce from different nations. As a result of which the employees and the managers working on the international projects are not able to perform well as they lack in them the necessary global leadership skills which becomes a major drawback or limitation in the successful running of the business. It becomes very critical to manage the staff in today’s multinational organizations where the managers lack the global leadership skills to manage the work force and work profitably (Dunning, J., 2003).

With the international human resource management there has been a different set of principles, strategies and policies as compared to the ones followed in domestic human resource management for effective management of the human resources. Lundy is of the opinion, that with the gradual changes in the working style of the organizations, observed by change in the functions, objectives, boundaries in case of multinational organizations. In this case, the management of the people becomes imperative and this can only be done with effective global leadership skills.

Scullion & Starkey holds that the success of the multinational companies lies in the effective leadership skills which will the managers to better manage its personnel resources which will determine the success of the international business. The major problems that arise in the management system in multinational companies are characterized by the cultural diversity, management diversity, language, ethnicity, and lifestyle. The core skills which a leader needs to possess in multinational companies and especially when he is on an international project are:
i. Cultural sensitivity – the managers, leaders who work for the global organizations should possess the quality of cultural sensitivity. This means that the leaders should be able to coordinate and work with employees and staff with a different culture. The leaders should be able to interact with people outside ones own culture as cultural influences shape the very structure and basis of the business. To maintain the compatibility of perceptions in a company’s human resource policies and procedures an effective leader with global leadership skills is required. An effective global leader is the one who can maintain distance working relationship, handle cultural problems and also avoid any miscommunication in the languages and dialects spoken.
