Celebrities have a great effect on the people we become. Some people spend so much time consumed by the entertainment world that they begin to idolize certain celebrities in hopes of becoming like them. Two major starlets in the eye of countless teenage girls around the world would be Jennifer Lawrence, known for her starring role as Katniss Everdeen in the film The Hunger Games, and Miley Cyrus, a hit singer with number one songs, “We Can’t Stop” and “Wrecking Ball”. These two stars both have large and supportive fan bases, but which celebrity is the better role model for teenage girls is the question at hand. Jennifer Lawrence is a better role model for teenage girls than Miley Cyrus because of her beliefs, modesty, and humbleness.
To begin with, Jennifer Lawrence is a better role model for teenage girls than Miley Cyrus because of her beliefs. Jennifer Lawrence’s ideals have a deeper positive influence on her fans. She cares a great deal about what her fans think in regard to body image. “I’m never going to starve myself for a part… I don’t want little girls to be like, ‘Oh, I want to look like Katniss, so I’m going to skip dinner,’” Lawrence explained to Elle magazine. (Marcus) On the other hand, Miley Cyrus appears to have few morals when it comes to her ideals. Cyrus tends to focus on what she thinks will benefit herself while rarely taking into consideration the effect she has on her fans. To illustrate, Cyrus encourages any innuendo such as partying, drinking, and drug use. Cyrus’s hit song “We Can’t Stop” is practically an anthem to her fans, where she encourages them to do whatever they please with no regard to the rules. An example from the song that encourages said behavior is “We like to party, dancing with Molly.” The genuine messages Jennifer Lawrence conveys to her fan base versus the negative messages Miley Cyrus likes to express are what makes Jennifer Lawrence a better choice of role model for teenage girls.
In addition to having strong beliefs, Jennifer Lawrence is a better role model than Miley Cyrus because of her modesty. Jennifer Lawrence keeps the fact that she is almost constantly in view of the media in mind and behaves accordingly. For instance, Lawrence opts for classic, modest styles when attending red carpet events. Lawrence’s clothing choices almost always leave the rest of her body up to the imagination. In contrast, Cyrus does whatever she pleases without keeping the society watching in mind. For example, she recently performed at the Video Music Awards in immodest clothing while dancing provocatively. Her music videos have often included footage...
