There has always been controversy on whether exit exams should be required for a high school student’s graduation. Exit exams cause narrow statewide curriculum, too much emphasis on a single test, stress for the students, and stress for the teachers trying to reach state score standards; however on the optimistic view, standardized testing assures that students work harder, schools discover areas of weakness, and allows schools to improve performance. Exit exams hurt students who pass or fail them.Placing so much importance on one test, that is currently at a tenth grade level is asinine. These tests are supposed to help us improve, strengthen the students weaknesses, and give the students ...view middle of the document...

A high school student should not have this much stress on their shoulders. Educators see that students are experiencing extreme levels of tests. The root of the problem many suggest, that “Standardized Testing” is the problem. The students educational system is relying on the test scores from the exams to compare students. This has forced teachers to teach students the goals of the state and not on mastery of the subject ( brain connect 2). These tests seem to bring out the worst in students. From anxiety, cutting class, and rebellion. Students seem to be showing more anxiety when it comes to taking tests. Of course anxiety levels increase with age, but exit exams seem to make these levels rise.The anxiety comes from the teacher telling the student if they do not pass they will not be able to graduate. This anxiety is then turned into stress. Now that the student is stressed, the student begins to feel the pressure of not passing. The stress can then affect the students work in the classroom, and on the day of the test; but more importantly it affects the students mind. The student will start cutting class, refuse to participate in the classroom, act out, feel depressed, and self harm. The students have the idea of perfect scores on tests put in their head from teachers, that they themselves strive to be perfect. The students can not handle this and have a mind set to not care. With this they start believing that everything is useless and grow a different personality. this personality is used for protection, because the student feels the pressure of the tests. Students should not have to feel like that. The students do not necessarily become test wise after taking these tests.
Standardized testing does not only affect the students but the teachers as well. Many educators are leaving the art of teaching, because they feel schools do not teach anymore and schools rely on test scores rather than education ( alfie kohn 2). The teachers are thinking of resigning from their posts, because they see the Students stressed, anxiety ridden, and rebelling because of these tests. In fact some of the teachers that have resigned are among the very best educators.Teachers have even gone so far as to boycott “Standardized Testing”. Teachers say the reason for Boycotting these tests is because, they believe that the tests are a waste of time.The teachers say that focusing on state mandated tests scores, rather than education itself does not allow the teachers to actually teach. Teachers have to waste their time watching kids bubbling in tests when they could be teaching the student the ( right way). Teachers become teachers become teachers because they have a passion to teach, not follow state mandated tests and scores. If the state and schools tell the teachers to just follow the state curriculum; the teachers are not really teaching, they are just following state standards. Whats the purpose of having teachers if they’re not even allowed to teach. ...
