The Secondhand Legacy Of Socrates Essay

Socrates was born around the year 469 B.C.E, and during his lifetime became one of the most well-known philosophers in the world. According to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, much of the information that is known about Socrates is secondhand; this is because he never wrote anything, unlike many of the other philosophers. The information known is most likely from the writings of his most famous student, Plato. The teachers of Socrates are unknown, although many believe he got his ideas from the teachings and doctrines of Anaxagoras and even Heraclitus.
According to “The Window: Philosophy On The Internet, Philosophers”, “Socrates is described as having neglected his own affairs, instead spending his time discussing virtue, justice, and piety wherever his fellow citizens congregated, seeking wisdom about right conduct so that he might guide the moral and intellectual improvement of Athens.” Socrates developed a method called the Socrates Doctrine, which helped him gain the knowledge one ones true self. Socrates method would almost go hand in hand with Sigmud Freud’s ideas of the unconscious mind. Freud’s ideas said that human’s behavior, actions, and even thoughts are all controlled by a part of the brain that humans have no control over. Socrates believed that no one does wrong voluntarily. But unlike Sigmund Freud, Socrates thought that these wrong doings were from the soul. Socrates believed the soul keeps everything in order, including the mind and moral behavior.
Socrates’ Doctrine, or method, has been used all over the world. According to the University of Chicago, The Law School, “Socrates engaged in questioning of his students in an unending search for truth. He sought to get to the foundations of his students' and colleagues' views by asking continual questions until a contradiction was exposed, thus proving the fallacy of the initial assumption.” This method can still be helpful in many ways, including, a group discussion for a large group, or be used to make an argument....
