The soldiers that fought in the Vietnam War had to endure many things. Some of these things they had to endure were human emotion itself. One of the main factors that contributed to those feelings were the things that they carried with them. Everything they carried had effects on them whether it is physical or mental. Every thing they carried could in one-way or another cause them to emotionally or physically break down. Pain, loss, safety and fear were some of the greatest emotions that were triggered by the things that the soldiers of Vietnam War carried.
Pain: one of the most crippling emotions that the human can experience. Pain is caused in many ways. There is emotional pain and physical pain. The soldiers of the Vietnam War felt both of these types of pain during their one-year trip in Vietnam. The pain what was felt on the body was created from the numerous weapons, explosives and ammunition cartages that had to be carried at all times.
Among the necessities or near-necessities were P-38 can openers, pocket knives, heat tabs… …and two or three canteens of water. Together, these items weighed between 12 and 18 pounds. They all carried steel helmets that weighed 5 pounds. On their feet they carried jungle boots—2.1 pounds. (O’Brien 2)
After many hours of carrying these supplies the soldiers would start to break down. The weight of the things that they carried would have devastating affects on their bodies but the soldiers had to endure. All of the soldiers needed to keep going in order to survive This shows many of the supplies that every solder need to have in order to survive the horrors of Vietnam. These soldiers also had to endure emotional pain from the things that they carried. Some of the emotions that they carried could be numerous things. A common pain that soldiers felt was the pain of one of their friend dying. In some cases this emotion would never leave the soldier. Some soldiers had to carry this thought for the rest of their lives. Carrying emotion pains can be very dangerous especially in a war zone. This emotion could distract the solder and lead them astray from their line of duty. Pain is an awful emotion to experience. It can be damaging and crippling in so many ways. Many people have had to experience pain but the soldiers of the Vietnam War had to experience pain in a new way. They had to carry their pains. They had to carry and endure what these pains did to them. Every American soldier had to carry pain in a physical sense and a mental one.
Loss can be a devastating emotion to have to carry. Many soldiers had to carry this emotion when they were in Vietnam because of many factors. Many soldiers carried picture of loved ones or of friends who had dies in the war. They carried these things to let them remember those who they love so much. They all had one thing that would remind them of home. Many had brought things that many would describe as foolish to bring with them because they were too “civilian”. In the book...
