The teacher in a developing democratic societySouth Africa has not yet reached the level of democracy that should have reached after the 1994 elections. There are still major challenges experienced by the 21st Century society which some of them the country tried to overcome. These include inequality, globalization, unemployment, defence of freedom and knowledge society. These challenges have a major impact on the provision of education as well as the teacher. If I may reflect back on democracy I soon realise that democracy is supposed to empower people equal rights, freedom of speech and religion, respect human rights and access to education for everyone. According to Ramdass (2009) teachers are caught in a spotlight where they should provide an education that can produce responsible, participatory and reflective citizens that contribute to an emerging democracy. In this essay I am going to argue the challenges in the 21st century and their impact on both education system and teachers. And also I am going to look at the teacher in the developing democratic country and the teaching strategies a teacher should develop in order to sensitise learners towards freedom. My arguments will be in support of underlying ideas of philosophers on the basis of what education should achieve.Challenges to society in the 21st CenturyUnemployment is one of the major problems experienced by South African public. It recklessly influences the crime and violence experienced in the country. The most likely antidote for this issue would be education and training though skills development. According to Ramdass (2009), the explanation for unemployment is that there is lack of skills which inhibits economic growth. Paulo Freire (1921-1997) also emphasized that lack of education and lack of belief in themselves and their abilities is what denying the opportunities for them to contribute to the society through employment skills. For example most of the jobs in this society need educated people to contribute with their skills which they gained from education.However, on the other hand education is not always a prerequisite for employment or the contribution to society. An individual can be useful to society through belief in themselves and their abilities. For example you can use your hands to change the world; you don't need education to use your hands. Since painting is always part of the society, let say you have a skill of painting, you can produce the art works to the society and in this way you contribute to it and at the same time you gain an income for yourself.Paulo Freire (1921-1997) emphasised that adults who have not had educational opportunity should experience education that is based on contextual learning. According to Imel (2000), contextualised learning emphasizes problem solving and it employs authentic assessment.
