The Two Sides Of Maturity Essay

These two pieces of work, “Eleven,” by Sandra Cisneros and “School,” by Rosemary Catacalos depict two children in elementary school and the struggles they encounter. The poem, “School,” describes a dyslexic boy in the second grade named David Talamentez who encounters many hassles throughout the year, but on the last day makes the point that his grades do not reflect how he shines as a person. The other piece, “Eleven,” portrays a girl, Rachel on her eleventh birthday who has acquired intellectual maturity, but lacks emotional maturity. These two pieces of work exemplify the two different types of maturity and how they differentiate in life’s daily struggles.

Rachel’s day did not go as planed, but she definitely did get a surprise. Her teacher, Mrs. Price, explains to the class that someone left a red sweater on the coat rack, and it has been there for months and she demands to know whom it belongs to. The classroom erupts with jubilant replies like nope, not mine, and other various remarks about the jacket, yet still nobody claims it; until Sylvia Saldivar pipes in to say, “I think it belongs to Rachel”(1). Rachel knows that the sweater does not belong to her, but, caught up in the moment, Rachel says nothing. Her dilemma continues on as her mind twists this situation into something far worse than what happens in reality. Rachel nonchalantly nudges the sweater off to, “the tippy-tip corner of my desk” (2), when all of a sudden her teacher has had enough and scolds Rachel stating, “You put that sweater on right now and no more nonsense”(2).
