There has been quite a bit of controversy between what the real effect video games are having on teenagers. Although everybody swings one way or another, most can agree that albeit video games may or may not be bad, the overuse of these games, can be and is a major problem in the world. Many believe that video games have an exponentially negative effect on teenagers. Many believe that video games desensitize players. In a 2005 study, violent video game exposure has been linked to reduced P300 amplitudes in the brain, which is associated with desensitization to violence and increases in aggressive behavior. Moreover, an argument can be concluded due to the fact that video games are not bad. The overuse of video games though, could be and is a problem in the world today. Another valid reason is that video games did not turn these people into callous killers. Video games do, however, teach teens and anyone who uses them, how to shoot and load a gun, and how to aim and fire. Yet, these are things that teens can find easily using the internet. This then, by deduction, implies that video games cannot be the only reason mortals swoop to such an extreme act.
Notwithstanding the implication of how video games are not the only cause of extreme aggressive behavior, they can be a valid cause of a slightly more aggressive demeanor. Many studies have concluded the possibility in which violent video games can cause more aggressive acts, teach gamers that violence is acceptable, and even encourage players with in game points and prizes when asked to kill another avatar or computer controlled opponent.
Such allegations, including, aggressive behavior in teens due to excessive violent gameplay, are proven by the focus of gamers on first person shooters, in which the player’s heart rate rises, thoughts are increasingly aggressive, which in turn, creates a situation where an even slightly mild or ambiguous provocation will be interpreted in a hostile fashion. Likewise, the snowballing use and addiction to violent video games constitute increasing violent thoughts and even in some extreme cases, severe actions. These long term impacts on the human brain can then lead to ever growing violence and parallel bullying. In reality, increasing reports of bullying can be attributed to partially the popularity of violent video games such as GTA or Grand Theft Auto. A 2008 study depicting the correlation between violent video games and acts of aggression called “Grand Theft Childhood” reported that 60% of middle school boys who played at least one M-rated game, hit or beat up someone, compared to 39% of boys who did not play a Mature-rated games.
