The Untold Story Essay

1265 words - 6 pages

Spike Lee, Martha Stewart, Nicki Minaj, Bill Cosby and Michael Bloomberg are all connected by invisible strands that bind them. Most would ask what is the substance of these bonds, how could all these individuals from different worlds be connected? The individuals listed above are all successful “transplant New Yorkers” (people who are not originally from N.Y.C) who went from rags to riches. They are the inspiration for the roughly four million non – natives found within the city. Other significant reason for the huge influx of non – natives are popular compositions by Frank Sinatra and When O’ Henry which are “New York, New York” and “The Duel” respectively, both of which are guilty of ...view middle of the document...

The author describes New York as a city that even catches the interest of the Greek gods on Mt. Olympus. He makes the statement that “New York stands unique among the cities of the world” this is one of those sentences that amplify the charm and desirability of New York City. Another sentence that really stood out was when William said “I’m clearing eight thousand dollars a year selling automatic pumps”, this story is taking place in 1910 where eight thousand then is equivalent to roughly two hundred thousand now, this is a character who came to New York with literally nothing and in four years is making a huge sum of money. What motivates people more than money? After reading that sentence most will feel that they could do the same, hence leading to our current predicament.
The song New York, New York by Frank Sinatra is also extremely positive, if you could cut the lyrics they would bleed optimism. He says “if I can make it there I can make it anywhere” which is fundamentally saying that New York is the best place on earth, also the individual being portrayed is leaving his home with “vagabond shoes” which implies poverty to then wake up and be “top of the list, head of the heap and king of the hill” this essentially encompasses the “American dream”, this song leads people to believe that there is a higher chance of obtaining the “American dream” in New York City.

The similarities between the two texts are overwhelming they both illustrate individuals who move from their respective towns, seeking to make it big in New York City, both authors are also “transplant New Yorkers” which most likely leads to their distorted view of the city, within their subconscious they both probably unintentionally compare New York to their hometown an error in which clouded their judgment. Surprisingly these two texts have a few differences as well the major one being that in Frank Sinatra’s song the individual has not yet comes to terms with the reality that is New York he has not dealt with the stench, the long winters, the rodents or the cost of living he is still dwelling within the fantasy stage, however in “The Duel” the two main characters have passed that stage and are finally beginning to realize the severity of their predicament.
The two male characters from the duel arrived to New York in the same manner as person being portrayed in Frank Sinatra’s song bright-eyed, enthusiastic, positive ready to battle the city head on, but were forced to a...
