Since the reign of Nixon in the presidential office the drug war practices have led to the conviction of millions of Americans – excessively poor people and people of color – while this drug war is continually failing in the reduction of drug use and drug related disease and overdose. The major problem with the war on drugs is the way authorities – like government officials – are handling the situations brought upon through the drug war. A solution to the war on drugs would be to create safer way to help drug users across America.
Drug courts are not the answer to the war on drugs; health centered offices are the approach to drug use in America. Placing millions of non-violent drug users behind bars does not solve the solution of drugs in America; it only limits the amount of drug use in the time period that the “offender” is behind bars. As said by Robert Steele (CIA: High-Ranking Official) in the movie American Drug War: The Last White Hope, “the drug ...view middle of the document...
This solution may generally decrease the use of drugs in America, by the example of tobacco use. Evidence shows that since the taxes and pricing of tobacco products have increase the use of tobacco has generally decreased.
Since the start of the war on drugs by President Nixon there has been a roaring increase in the volume of drugs that have been brought into the United States. As said by Judge James P. Gray (Superior Court, Orange Country CA) “Money. Money controls this whole movement”. This shows that government employees and organizations are not handling the war on drugs “problems” correctly. The government could and should create a simple solution to the war on drugs; become a part of it. If the crack cocaine epidemic was as big and powerful as the news casts had stated then how come the government did not interject their money and lives into the safe distribution of drugs. Why have they had to spend over “20 billion dollars” and “20 years” to not decrease the war on drugs? Knowing how much money Ricky Ross had made off of the business of crack cocaine why didn’t the government provide a legal way for drugs to be distributed throughout? My solution to the major problem with the war on drugs could have finished Nixon’s continues “War on Drugs”.
Later on in the film director Kevin Booth and friends had made their way to the city of Amsterdam to check out their solution of safe houses for their war on drugs. In the film it shows how this solution created a positive use of drugs. The recorded film in the movie shows the complete opposite of what is stated by General Barry McCaffrey in the film stating that there you had to step and hop over all dead bodies that covered the streets.
The major problem with the war on drugs aren’t the offenders or the consumption of the drugs but the way the war on drugs has been handled by authority figures, like government officials. A solution to the drug war would be creating safe ways for the drugs in America to get out to its consumers and have safe places for these drug users to use the drugs. If these solutions were in place there could possibly be a decrease in the conviction of millions of Americans that are non-violent drug users.
