Many people mistake the white tiger as being albino. They have icyblue eyes, a pink nose, creamy white fur and chocolate to black stripes. A white tiger can be born from a mating of two orange tigers carrying the recessive gene, known as a double recessive allele. A Bengal tiger with two normal allele, or one normal and one white allele is colored orange. Only a double dose of the mutant allele results in a white tiger.During the last 100 years, only about 12 such white tigers have been seen in India, resulting 1 in every 1,000. Poachers are what caused the white tiger to be endangered. Tiger?s body parts are sought for use in traditional Chinese medicine and exotic recipes. As well as their body parts, their coats can be sold for small fortune, so to many people this is the ideal animal to hunt if they want some fast money. Prices for a white tiger today start at $60,000. Various programs have been set up around the world to help the tiger population increase. Some individual groups that are actively involved areWWF-World Wide Fund for Nature.CITIES, the United Nations Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Fauna and Flora.Emergency Rapid Response FundThese groups are intensifying their activities involving the monitoring of illegal trade in tiger parts as well as stepping up their support to anti-poaching activities in tiger habitats. It is belief that if you are born in the Chinese year of the tiger you are unusually lucky.
