“Globalization 3.0 is shrinking the world from a size small to size tiny… Globalization 1.0 was countries globalizing … Globalization 2.0 was companies globalizing, Globalization 3.0 – the force that give it its unique character – is the new found power for individuals to collaborate and compete “(Friedman , 2007, p. 9-10 ). Moreover, I agree with the author; since, individuals today can communicate with anyone in the world. In the past, people can only work, study and communicate with others in their environment. Moreover, in my opinion the most significant event is the overinvestment in fiber optic that made the World Wide Web a powerful tool to collaborate. During the internet boom, where almost every idea that involves creating an online service was funded, people looked at the internet as the new gold rush. This lead companies to believe that the best way to get a return on their investment is to connect the world not be freeways, but by fiber optics that can carry the information with high speed to the four corners of the plant. Friedman (2007) wrote “A massive overinvestment in the fiber-optic cable needed to carry all the new digital information. This development in turn, wired the whole world together, and without anyone really planning it, made Bangalore a suburb of Boston “. Furthermore, the second major idea introduce by the author is how people collaborate in the flat world.
People have a need to connect and collaborate to achieve a goal. In the past, individuals worked, studied and accomplished tasks on their own. Today it’s a completely different environment, where Individuals now are working together like never before. A company can have a CEO in Denver, a COO in Dubai, an office staff in India and a manufacturing division in China and it’s all possible, because of online communications tools and software, which are affordable and reliable. Friedman (2007) quoted Mark Andreessen, who founder Mosaic, saying “ ‘…people are wired to want to connect to other people and they find it objectionable not to be able too ‘ ” (p.68). In my opinion, the success of social networks such as Facebook, Google Plus and Tweeter are driven through the desire of people to be part of a community bigger than their surrounding environment.
