After researching and further examining the theories I will address the ways they have effected my planning and delivery of learning. I have identified that Behaviourism and Cognitivism are present in the planning and delivering of my lessons. I use behaviourism as this principle has the element of motivation due to my learners having low confidence and self-esteem there is a higher need to focus on building their motivation to successfully complete the course. Positive and negative reinforcement allows the management of behaviour in the lesson encouraging positive behaviour whilst removing inappropriate and negative aspects. For instance, in my Customer Service lesson, there is a unit that addresses ‘Identifying Good and Bad Customer Service’. I ask my learners to describe one incident of a good customer experience that they have had and one bad experience where they share with the rest of the class. Following this with a discussion in groups with one group listing 5 key points of what they consider bad customer service and the other group as good customer service. These tasks have had positive interest from learners which increases their motivation. I work towards including SMART objectives in my lesson plans and by breaking down the individual units into smaller parts to identify individual outcomes. In addition, these courses I deliver are driven towards gaining employment and I link the course content with the view from an employment prospective.

As the course progresses I become less of teacher and more of a facilitator allowing learners to take control of more of their learning by using more advanced organisers. “Ausbel coined the name Advance Organizers: they are simply devices used in the introduction of a topic which enable learners to orient themselves to the topic, so that they can locate where any particular bit of input fits in and how it links with what they already know”.

Ausubel's major principle was that “the most important determinant of learning is what the learner already knows which directs the learner to relevant prior experience or learning (preferably of course live and significant experience) and also points forward to new material” (Atherton, 2013). Furthermore, by discussing and using their experiences learners are able to they build their self-esteem and confidence which continues to increase their motivation.
