Thg Steroids Essay

581 words - 2 pages

Steroids are muscle-enhancing substances taken in the form of needles, pills or liquids. They are used to gain muscle mass and to increase performance in any strenuous activity. More specifically, sports. Steroids are very unhealthy to the body and more importantly illegal in the United States. They are ordered or smuggled in from other countries. Steroids are a huge problem in sports such as the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL and most others as well. Many athletes have recently been discovered taking what they call Tetrahydrogestrinone or (THG).A steroid is a synthetic version of the male hormone testosterone, and when a urine sample is tested the analyzing equipment is trained to search for certain remnants, or 'Metabolites', of what is left of the steroid in the athlete's system. Once it discovers this metabolite, it registers as a spike on the read-out. A designer steroid has the metabolite removed to avoid detection. No matter how advanced the detecting equipment, it cannot test for something that it has not been programmed to test for. With a metabolite removed, the drug may not be as effective as the original, but it is still better then taking nothing at all. Designer steroids cost as much as $15,000 for a two-month course. As with anything with the word "designer" in its name, they are more expensive than normal. Highly qualified chemical engineers, who have access to a lab and the raw chemical compounds needed to manipulate compounds, make designer steroids. Some effects of steroids are abdominal pains, hives, chills, euphoria, diarrhea, fatigue, fever, muscle cramps, headache, nausea and vomiting, bone pains, depression vomiting blood, impotence, breast development in...
