What To Expect When You Are Born Female

891 words - 4 pages

My childhood consisted of the do’s and don’ts of being a female. Growing up, gender has been a big topic in my life. My view of females is influenced by my dad, his opinions and complaints has shaped me on what I should become because of my gender, therefore he has lead me to disagree with his belief of what a women should be like.
One person that has influenced my views of women is my dad. He is the main reason that I am who I am today. When he doesn’t like what I do, act, or say he brings up something about stereotypes. When I sit with my legs up, he would complain and say that “only country boys do that,” or if I am on the computer and he see’s something on the floor he complains and says “you need to keep the house clean, you are a girl you are suppose to clean if something is dirty” or he would say “sweep the floor” and if I complain back he brings up the “old folk tales.” When I say a word that sounds like a bad word my dad would say “you sound like a cowgirl.” He always incorporates gender into how I act. My dad has indirectly shaped my view of what females are throughout my life.
The complaints and opinions that he portrays has left messages telling me what women should act. When he says “‘only country boys do that,’ ‘you need to keep the house clean, you are a girl. You are suppose to clean if something is dirty,’ ‘sweep the floor,’ and ‘you sound like a cowgirl,’” he is telling me that I am not behaving like a female or I am not what he expects me to be. I shouldn’t sit with my legs up because that is what men do and that its not appropriate for women to sit like that. He has al these expectations of me because I am a girl for example, I must clean and cook. Why? because thats what women do according to his perspective. It is his way of trying to prepare me for the future, so when I have a family, I do my job when I have my own household. He trying to make me the perfect housewife since my mom isn’t exactly what every mom is, a housewife also according to his perspective. It is like he is reading off a manual, where it has rules and guidelines that chores are the woman's’ duty to fulfill. He brings up the old tales of my grandma, to tell me that this is what women should do. My grandma...
