Thinking & Decision Making PaperMGT 350September 29, 2008Introduction"We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, we make the world" Buddha (Brainy Quote, 2008).Thinking is a fact of life. We think about what we want to eat, what we are going to wear, or what type of job we want. These are all simple thoughts that people have on a regular basis but what happens when an individual has a problem and they need to think things through a little further? There are many different thinking styles and conclusions, the answer one comes up with, depend on which style is used. In this essay, we will discuss three types of thinking styles - creative, divergent, and inductive, and how they relate to each other and to the styles that are closely compared and contrasted with them. This paper will analyze divergent, inductive, and creative thinking styles while also comparing and contrasting each of the three. As well, each of the three different styles will talk about how each of these styles affects the process of critical thinking.Divergent ThinkingDivergent Thinking is the opposite of convergent thinking. It allows creative thinking; it allows you to expand your mind. There are many possible answers, unlike convergent thinking, which only allows one.The basic way to look at this process is that you diverge from the task to explore all possible ways to accomplish it and then, after careful consideration, converge in a set of solutions that yield the finished application. We branch off (diverge) and shoot for novel ideas, new perspectives and creativity. Instead of a single correct answer, there may be a whole host of possibilities. There are four basic techniques to stimulate divergent thinking; brainstorming which involves generating lists of ideas in random order, journaling that is used to collect spontaneous thoughts, free writing for short periods of time to generate ideas, and subject mapping which involves visualizing the ideas developed in brainstorming. These techniques and many more are employed by Carollo Engineers to design and build water/wastewater treatment plants.Carollo CAMP™ (Concentrated Accelerated Motivated Problem-Solving) is a new process of divergent thinking developed by Carollo Engineers to improve project delivery for our clients. The process was originally developed internally to facilitate fast track alternative delivery projects such as design-build. The benefits were so convincing that we began implementing the technique on traditional design-bid-build projects.CAMP™ is a technique to optimize stakeholder participation, make decisions, solidify process criteria, and critically evaluate the design. The process employs structured, decision-making modeling to validate the outcomes. The result is progress beyond typical expectations. For even though we slow down and carefully analyze data and information, the...
