Dancing Counts as A Sport
The google definition of a sport is “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment”. I have been dancing competitively and recreationally since I was 2 ½ years old. I have heard both sides to this dispute about dancing being a sport and I have come to the conclusion that it does follow the definition of being a sport. When people think of sports they think of about 10 things; competition, workouts, stretching, gaining muscles, stamina, uniforms, equipment, having the ability the remember things, injuries, and most importantly difficulty. Dance incorporates all 10 of those things.
First off dance is a very completive sport not only at competitions but just in classes. You are not only competing against yourself to be make yourself a better dance, but you are also competing against every other dancer in your division. Now that being said going back to the definition I stated that says that sports are an activity involving either one single person or involving a whole team. At a dance competition you can dance alone which is called a solo or you can compete in a group aka a group dance. No matter what you’re doing you are still on a team.
Dance requires uniforms just as any other sport does. Now these uniforms may change every time we get on stage but in the dance room they are considers uniforms. For example, in ballet each dancer is required to wear pink tights, a leotard, hair must be up in a bun and the dancer must be wearing his/her ballet shoes. There are also dance jackets that competition dance team wears and when I was a dancer we were required to wear those on stage for awards just as a soccer player is required to wear their uniform on the soccer field.
Dance equipment is no different than a field goal, or a soccer net or a basketball hoop. As dancers we use ballet bares, mats, and moveable wooden tap floors. For each dance we have different equipment they are just called props. Competitive dancers also have make up as an equipment.
In baseball and football, you are required to remember each...
