Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya was published in 1972 in America. This book is of a young Mexican boy who is caught between internal and external conflicts. Antonio, the main character, changes as a results of inner conflicts, one is which is he a vaquero like his father the Marez or a farmer like his mother's brothers the Luna, and which god should he believe in the Golden Carp, the pagan god, or the Christian God. Antonio throughout the story sets off on a psychological journey to answer the questions to his dilemmas. Although he searches rigorously, at the end he question are yet to be answered.Antonio's first conflict is what is he? Is he a Marez that needs to be in the open plains, or a Luna that milks the earth of its riches? For example, is in the first chapter when he had the dream of his birth. In this dream there was a struggle between the Marez and the Luna. They argued about whether the baby's umbilical cord and the afterbirth should be buried in the Luna field to renew their fertility and to make sure the baby will follow the Luna's ways or be burned and let the wind of the llano scatter the ashes. This argument led to the drawing of their guns but Ultima stops it and took the remnants of the birth and buries it and only she knew the destiny of the child. This dream set up the basis of his conflict of what he is destine to become. After he had this dream he asked his mother questions about his birth. The answers were congruent with his dream. His mother scolded the Marez family and said that he would grow up to be like the Luna and maybe a priest. This dawned upon him and led him to ponder through out the story what he truly was. Also in another of his dreams he is with his brother and they tell him that he is not a Marez that he is a Luna and that he is going to be a farmer -priest for his mother.
