This Is How I Did It

1496 words - 6 pages

Martin Luther King, Jr once said “Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable...Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.” This inspires me because over the course of my high school career I have set many goals for myself. I have survived writing many goal essays and quite frankly I have accomplished much of what I wanted to. Selfishness is a large motivator when it comes to personal goals. I have always wanted to play varsity field hockey and varsity softball, become the softball varsity captain my senior year, become part of the top of my class, be a member of the ...view middle of the document...

In field hockey, I made the varsity team my freshman year and played for the next two years, until we didn’t have a team my senior year, on top of the fact that I was still recovering from an ACL reconstruc surgery. It was the same for softball and now here I am playing varsity softball for the second year. Accomplishing those goals that I have had since I was twelve, made me very proud of myself. It has affected me and who I am today. Although I won’t be continuing my love of sports in the near future, I will be attending boot camp where I hope to work just as hard, push myself, and critique myself just as much.
As I said before, sports are a big part of my life. I am very competitive, outgoing, and strong headed. One of my goals that I had set for myself, during sophomore year, was that I wanted to be the varsity captain during my senior year. I felt that, and knew that I did not really deserve to be captain it because I hadn’t played all four years, but the three years I did play I put all my effort into. After having torn my ACL during the second game of my junior softball season, I was disconcerted and upset. Although I couldn’t play anymore I went to every game that I could to support my teammates. When it came time for the banquet, I attended and I truly did not go in thinking that I was going to be captain this year. I can tell you that when Mr. Pirrello said that Abby and I were the captains for the 2014 season I was beyond ecstatic. It is the 2014 softball season; Abby, Amanda, and I are the captains and I couldn’t be happier. With softball being my favorite sport, being a captain is the biggest honor that I could have and I am looking forward to having a great season with the lovely ladies that are playing.
James S. Coleman once said, “Grades are almost completely relative, in effect ranking students relative to others in their class. Thus extra achievement by one student not only raises his position, but in effect lowers the position of others.” During my freshman year, I never really thought about my class rank. I did care about my grades though and I think that had something to do with why I care so much about my rank, now that I am a senior. Throughout the years I have worked hard to get good grades. My mother was always nagging me when they weren’t at her standards. During my schooling I have taken the highest level classes that were offered here. It was during my junior year that I really started to worry about what class rank I was. Since it was getting so close to picking a college and applying, being higher up in the class looked better on my applications. The students in the top of my class are all very close with our gpa. So throughout the years we were constantly fluctuating, but this year was the most important and my goal was to be in the top of my class. We are nearing the end of the year and I am number four in my class. ...
