Das Sonett "Der Wegelagerer" von Joseph Freiherr von Eichendorff bildet die Grundlage der folgenden Gedichtinterpretation. Besonders berücksichtigt wird die für Eichendorff als einem der Hauptvertreter der Spätromantik typische Verwendung von Symbolen. Dabei soll verdeutlicht werden, daß es bei einer Analyse der Gedichte Eichendorffs, die aufgrund ihrer recht einfachen Sprachstruktur häufig als auf den ersten Blick leicht verständlich erscheinen, gerade wegen der Verwendung bestimmter Chiffren, wie z.B. "Philister" oder "Wald", einer Ausdeutung ebendieser Chiffren bedarf, um die tatsächliche Aussageabsicht des Autors zu erkennen.Als Material für die Interpretation des "Wegelagerers" werden sowohl spezielle Werke über Eichendorffs Symbolverwendung, als auch allgemeine Werke über die Symbolik in der Romantik zugrunde gelegt, da es zum Verständnis des Gedichtes auch erforderlich ist, die Denkweise der Romantiker und ihr Lebensgefühl zu kennen.Schließlich werden zur Klärung von grundsätzlichen Fragen auch allgemeine Nachschlagewerke verwandt.1. Herkunft des GedichtesDas Gedicht "Der Wegelagerer", das zum Kreis der Gedichte aus der Kategorie "Sängerleben" gehört , wird auf das Jahr 1839 datiert. Für diese Datierung spricht die Sonettform, die Eichendorff in diesem Jahr bei mehreren Gedichten verwandte . Das Gedicht wurde erstmals 1841 im ersten Band der Gesamtausgabe der ´Werke´ "Joseph Freiherrn von Eichen-dorff´s" unter dem Titel "Der Wegelagerer" gedruckt .2. Äußere Form des GedichtesWie eingangs bereits erwähnt, handelt es sich bei dem "Wegelagerer" um ein Sonett. Typisch ist die Aufteilung in zwei Quartette und zwei Terzette. Das Reimschema der Quartette hält sich an die strenge Sonettform und weist nur zwei Reime nach dem Schema des umarmenden Reims auf. Die beiden Terzette sind durch zwei verschränkte Reime gestaltet, wobei Vers 11 und Vers 14 einen identischen Reim bilden ("führen" - "verführen").Alle Verse sind fünftaktig und streng alternierend aufgebaut, daß heißt, Eichendorff verzichtet hier auf die nach der Germanischen Verslehre mögliche freie Füllung der Senkungen.In den Versen 13 und 14 verwendet Eichendorff ein Enjambement, wodurch im letzten Vers das Wort "Zauberlied" betont wird, das für die Aussage des Gedichts von großer Bedeutung ist.Die äußerliche Zweiteilung des Gedichtes unterstreicht den Inhalt, denn auch hier ist eine Zweiteilung zu erkennen.Im ersten Teil, den beiden Quartetten, werden zwei Zustandsbeschreibungen geliefert. Das lyrische Ich stellt einerseits die politische Situation aus seiner Sicht dar, andrerseits seine Vorstellung von einem schönen Leben.Im zweiten Teil, den beiden Terzetten, wird das Ich aktiv und verkündet seinen Plan zur Befreiung der "armen Schönheit".
