Because of increase in environmental demands structure must be pleasing in appearance.And last but not the least construction process and procedures must reflect an economical design and use of materials,manpower and construction effort.
A gravity dam must be constructed of concrete which will meet the design criteria of strength,durability and permeability and other factors.Mix proportions are usually controlled by strength and durability considerations,cement content should be optimized to reduced the effects of heat of hydration.Properties of concrete vary with the mix proportions,type of ingredients and with age also.Tests must be made on full mass mix and specimens must be off sufficient age to adequately evaluate the strength
and elastic properties which will exist for concrete in the dam.According to Indian Code
of Standards mostly mass concrete may have largest size aggregate from 10 cm
(preferably 15 cm ) to 23 cm and cement content ranging from 150 to 235 kg per cu.m.
For heavily reinforced concrete largest size of aggregate as 2 cm and cement content of
approximately 355 kg per cu.m.
Strength of concrete:
The strength of concrete should satisfy early load and construction requirements and at some specific age it should have some specific compressive strength as determined by the designer.The specific age is often 365 days and may vary from structure to another.
Elastic Properties of concrete:
Concrete is not truly a elastic material.When concrete is subjected to sustained loads as may be expected in a dam the deformation produced by the load is divided into two parts elastic deformation which occurs immediately due to instantaneous modulus of
elasticity and the inelastic deformation or creep which develops gradually and continues for a indefinite time.
The effect of change in temperature of a gravity dam depends on the thermal properties of concrete.Thermal properties necessary for the evaluation of temperature effects are
co-efficient of thermal expansion,thermal conductivity and specific heat.Diffusivity of
concrete is the index of facility with which concrete will undergo temperature change.
