In this generation, the writing chances are decreasing. Everyone uses mails and texts. For these reasons, the skill of beautiful writing is getting worse. In most linguistic course which I took before, were required writing skill, such as English and Mandarin. And people say that a good writer has the ability to write something that can be interested in. I know that the skill relies on daily practice, but nowadays the daily practice is getting less. So students should be mandatory take timed essay test. Therefore, limited time brings power to student in writing. It force student to finish the essays. It is much effective than home essays.
Second reason, to have effective writing for students, in-class essays is great way to know about student’s ability to write is because that students do not have time to search resources or get helps from other people, it would show the real ability students have. The timed essays are usually mandatory for finishing within two hours for ESL students. Although the professor would like to talk about topic before taking in-class essays, but it is still hard to get enough background knowledge and find the right person for help. In addition, even we have fast way to get information from devices; however, it is really hard to looking for resources, grasping it, combining what you already have thought and releasing from your mind. For example, there was one time; I did not prepare a lot for in-class. I was entirely freaked out. During the exam time, I was trying to get the information from my smart phone but I did not have enough time to digest them, to understand them.
