What is courage? Atticus finch has the best description “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what”(Lee,149). In To Kill A Mocking Bird true courage can be shown by Mrs. Dubose, Jem, and Atticus By Fighting the fight they knew they could not win.The three parts in the book that quote can be directly applied to are Ms. Dubose and her morphine addiction, Jem standing up for his father at the jail house, and Atticus agreeing to defend Tom. These are acts of true courage performed by truly courageous people.
The first part in the book when true courage is found is when Ms. Dubose quits morphine so she can be addiction free when she dies. Atticus discusses this very thing when he says “… when you know you’re licked before you begin but begin anyway and you see it through no matter what” (Lee, 149). At this point Jem is very sad/angry that Ms. Dubose has just died and left him candy. Jem is also very confused on why he was forced to read to Ms. Dubose. Once Atticus tells him about her addiction to morphine he realizes that he was reading to her every day to keep her mind off the pain she was enduring. This shows true courage and as Atticus puts it “ I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand”(lee,149) Atticus is saying Ms. Dubose has real courage
for doing the thing that she knows she will fail at. Mrs. Dubose showed real courage and it seems her neighbor Jem also showed true courage but in a very different way.
The second time this form of true courage is shown is the jail house with the mob. The true courage is shown by none other than Jem, shows true courage when he refuses to leave his father’s side at the jail house even though the men that make up the mob are ready to kill tom and any one in there way. Atticus and Jem must have had the day lights scared out of him when the burly man said “’I’ll send him home... and grabbed Jem roughly by the collar. He yanked Jem nearly off...
