The Effects Of Motivation Factors In The Workplace

One of the most important and driving factors for achieving goals is motivation. Motivation is defined as “psychological processes that arouse and direct goal directed behavior” (Kreitner&Kinicki 207). Motivation is imperative in the workforce. Typically, work environments are very goal oriented. Experts argue that having goals motivates people. While goals are important for people in the work place, incentives are also important. Rewards for reaching goals include the feeling of fulfillment upon reaching the goal as well as the satisfaction of being recognized. It is most often the job of the manager to use motivation to encourage employees to accomplish tasks which they may not otherwise attempt. At Bank of America, where I work as a teller, the company has set up a system to motivate employees in groups so that they can achieve maximum performance. Managers should understand what inspires employees to initiate action, what influences their choice of action, and why they continue in their action over time. It is essential for managers or anyone in the leadership role to grasp the concept of motivation and apply this motivation to the workforce.
In 2009, Todd Arnold and his colleagues conducted research that investigated the effects of a competitive environment in a retail setting. In the article, “Do Competitive work Environments Help or Hurt Employees?” Arnold conducted a survey of 2000 employees that were part of a large retailer based in the southeastern United States. He and his colleagues found that a highly competitive retail environment “may reduce the impact on the role ambiguity on employees’ job efficacy”. Similarly, when the employees worked in a competitive retail environment they felt a sense of motivation, job satisfaction, and a positive relationship among peers and supervisor. Likewise, an employee seems to thrive in a competitive retail environment, resulting in better performance, which leads to recognition and appreciation by their employers. Competition is a positive way to motivate people and help improve performance. Managers should try to ensure that the benefits of competition are maximized.
For example, my job as a teller can be very repetitive and tellers are required to interest customers to other products offered by the bank. If interested, the customer is referred to a personal banker. Our bank recently changed the number of referrals expected of a teller from 3-4 per day to 5% of the number of transactions a teller accomplishes in a day. Under this new in system, if a teller has 200 transactions in a day, they are expected to obtain 10 referrals. This increase in the number of referrals increased the amount of stress tellers were feeling. If a teller didn’t obtain enough on one day they would have to work extra hard to make up the numbers the next day. Employees and managers have different views on this new referral system.
